2 cups plain flour

1 cup sugar

250 grams dates

1 teaspoon biocarb. soda

4 eggs

125 grams walnuts, cut in small pieces

250 grams butter or margarine


1. Cut up dates into a basin and cover with 1 cup boiling water to which biocarb soda is added. Leave overnight.

2. Beat butter and sugar to cream, add eggs (one at a time) then when well beaten. Add dates. Add flour and nuts. Pour into an 8" round or square tin about 2" deep.

3. Bake in 300 degrees F / 150 degrees C / Gas 2 Cool or Slow oven for about 45 minutes. May be used plain or iced to taste.
